Sound Familiar?
- We farm out our counts.
- I'm doing all this work by hand.
- Warrant studies take weeks. Sometimes months.
- We haven't retimed since 2018.
- Everyone here is doing double duty.
- The council hears about it before we do.
Each of those costs drivers time and costs your department credibility. The calculator puts a dollar figure on it. The workshop shows you what to do next.
Every number in that calculator represents someone's trip that didn't end the way it should have.
About 100 people die on U.S. roads every day, and more than a quarter of those deaths happen at intersections (NHTSA, 2024). Signals are not the cause of every crash, and no timing plan removes all risk. But where congestion, long queues and outdated timing make crashes more likely, signal operation is one of the levers you control.
Our job is to help you measure what you are already fighting for: fewer calls to families, fewer serious injuries, and more people getting home on time.
Measured by Independent Evaluators, on Real Corridors
In Virginia, independent state and federal evaluations found 13% to 17% fewer intersection crashes after In|Sync was installed. Here is what you can look up.
Virginia adaptive-signal intersections from the VDOT In|Sync pilot. Federal Highway Administration safety evaluation, 2021 (FHWA-HRT-20-072).
Virginia DOT In|Sync pilot. Virginia Transportation Research Council, 2015 (VTRC 15-R24).
Missouri DOT Route 291, Lee's Summit. Midwest Research Institute.
code|GREEN with CYCLOPS on SR 347, Maricopa, AZ. Evaluated by HDR and Rick Engineering for MAG, 2023. The project won ITS Arizona's 2022 Best ITS Implementation award.
Straight talk: results vary. In the same federal study, Florida sites showed no significant crash change, and some Pennsylvania studies found none either. Side-street delay can rise on some corridors. That is why we measure your corridor before anyone recommends anything.
"Ultimately we feel that it's the best adaptive traffic control solution currently on the market."
"The results of their equipment are instant. The minute you turn it on, the results are there."
"It's real-time! When you have an influx of traffic, it takes care of that traffic immediately!"
"Tomorrow's technology is here today. In|Sync has proved to be something worth your time and investment."
The Corridor Fix Workshop
Turn your delay and crash numbers into a timing and funding game plan you can act on without adding to your workload. Taught engineer to engineer, live and on demand.
Find the corridor that costs the most
How to rank corridors by delay and crash cost with data you already have.
Fix timing without a retiming project
What modern detection and timing tools change, and what they don't.
Pay for it
Which state, MPO and federal programs fund signal work in 2027, and what reviewers look for.
Buy it without a long procurement
Purchasing paths that stay under small-purchase and city manager limits.
We Help You Get Funded. You Stay in Charge.
Funding is the most common reason good signal projects stall. We track state, MPO and federal programs and tell you which ones fit your corridor. Your staff or your consultant writes and submits the application. That keeps your procurement clean and keeps every option open.
What we provide, on request
- Program matches with deadlines and match rules
- Measured corridor data
- Independent study citations
- Benefit-cost inputs in USDOT terms
- Product cost ranges
- Letter of support templates
What stays with your agency
- The application narrative
- Scope and specifications
- The engineer's estimate
- Submission and contact role
- Every procurement decision
Who This Is Not For
- Agencies that don't control their own signal timing. If someone else runs your signals, start with them. We're glad to talk to both of you.
- Anyone who needs 24/7 or on-site support included. We support customers by phone and remote access during office hours, Central Time.
- Corridors that are over capacity all day.No timing plan fixes a demand problem. If the data says that, we'll tell you.
What Engineers Ask Us
How is the delay cost calculated?
Yearly vehicles = signals x main-street daily traffic x 365. We assume 30 seconds of average control delay per vehicle (the middle of HCM level of service C) and estimate the share a retime can recover from how old the timing is: 5 to 10% if retimed in the last 2 years, 10 to 20% at 3 to 5 years, 15 to 25% beyond 5 years. Those bands sit at the low end of FHWA's published 15 to 40% delay reductions. Time is valued at USDOT's 2026 benefit-cost values ($20.10 per person-hour, 1.52 people per car, $37.20 per truck-hour, 5% trucks). Fuel uses idle burn rates and recent prices. Cross-street traffic, stops and safety are left out of the delay figure, so it leans low. It is a screening estimate, not a traffic study.
How is the crash cost calculated?
Without your crash records we estimate crashes from traffic volume: entering vehicles = main-street traffic plus an assumed cross street at one third of it, times 365, at 0.78 crashes per million entering vehicles (the Massachusetts DOT statewide average for signalized intersections). About a third of those crashes injure someone. Each injury crash is valued at $463,854 and each property-damage crash at $9,700, from USDOT's 2026 benefit-cost values. The savings range uses 0% to 13% fewer crashes, with 5% as the conservative base case, from the independent studies above. Enter your own crash history in the workshop materials to replace the estimate.
Can we start small?
Yes. Most agencies start with one corridor and a purchase under the federal $15,000 micro-purchase limit or their city manager's approval limit, so no council vote is needed. Your purchasing office makes the call.
Can we buy without a formal RFP?
Often, yes. Some of our products are on state approved lists, and Washington agencies can use state contract 29023. We show you the paths your state and agency allow.
Are there annual license fees?
Some products carry an annual license and some don't. Every quote shows the first-year and ongoing cost on one page, so year two holds no surprises.
Does anything touch our network?
It doesn't have to. Data can stay on your network, or a unit can run on its own cellular connection. Your IT team chooses.
Will a PE stand behind the numbers?
Rhythm was founded by a licensed professional engineer, and our analysis is reviewed by engineers. Sealed work for your project comes from the engineer of record your agency chooses.
You carry responsibility for people you will never meet, at intersections you may only see on a map. Rhythm was started in 2005 by Dr. Reggie Chandra, Ph.D., PE, a former public-sector traffic engineer, to help engineers carry it. Our control method is claimed in five U.S. patents.
